Introduction to Zen Shiatsu

This very practical workshop introduces the basic techniques of hand and thumb pressure utilized in a simple, effective treatment of the neck, shoulders and back. It is designed for potential students of the Shiatsu Therapy Program who wish to learn more about shiatsu before embarking on the training, or for anyone who wishes to discover and use simple techniques to relieve pain, tension and stress. Functional Anatomy Program

Functional Anatomy is a thorough introduction to human anatomy. Designed for students of bodywork therapies, it is also an excellent program for practitioners who wish to review or upgrade their knowledge. An overview of the body's systems is covered, with an emphasis on the skeletal, muscular, circulatory and nervous systems. The approach to learning is practical and hands on.

Dates: Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Starts in September and finishes in November. (60 hours of instruction)

Textbooks: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, by Tortora and Grabowsky. This text will also be used in the Physiology Course that follows Anatomy. The Anatomy Colouring Book will be required as well.

Physiology

The Physiology program builds on Sourcepoint's Functional Anatomy program. Learning about the physical functioning of the body's various systems enables students to understand how the human organism works at a level that is essential in strengthening the therapeutic effect of the work of practitioners of shiatsu and other forms of bodywork therapy.

Pathology

Sourcepoint's Pathology program covers diseases that are most relevant for the practitioner of therapeutic bodywork. Understanding the causes, signs, symptoms and risk factors of disease is extremely important in developing a professional clinical practice.

Dates: Tuesdays and Fridays. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Starts in April and finishes in May (42 hours of instruction)

Chair Shiatsu Workshop

This workshop introduces the use of shiatsu techniques for clients seated on a massage chair. The focus is on relieving stress and easing pain in the upper body. Participants learn a 15 to 20 minute treatment format that can be offered for relaxation purposes. Theory includes a discussion of stress, its effects, and the role that shiatsu can play in minimizing its impact.

Shiatsu Essentials

SShiatsu Essentials introduces the basic shiatsu techniques of manual pressure in the prone, supine and sitting positions. An introduction to stretching techniques is included to provide a complete treatment format for the purpose of relaxation. Proper postural alignment, breathing and intention are emphasized. Shiatsu history, benefits, contraindications and cautions are included in the theory. Simple pressure point combinations for common concerns are provided.
