Tibetan Nuns Project

By Vera Lagasse

Artwork

Invited by Rinchen from the Tibetan Nuns Project,
A Langara delegation of ten,
Travelled across the globe,
To help Buddhist nuns in Dharamsala,
With their pain and trauma from leaving Tibet,
And loved ones behind.

We started slowly,
Giving scientific information on Energy Healing.
Nuns were shown how to sense energy,
And practised on each other.
Then our work began in earnest,
Providing treatments daily in three nunneries.

Dressed in maroon, with shaven heads,
They first came in small groups and giggled -
When we brushed and smoothed their auras.
Until they felt the caring and comfort
From the tenderness of our touch.
Then, they formed lines at the tables.

From 14 to 80 years of age,
They all had some distress:
Gastritis, arthritis, hepatitis,
Headaches, toothaches, backaches.
Accepted with such purity and clarity of soul.
All humans suffer - it's the first Noble Truth.

We set the most appropriate intention,
For the highest good - for all,
And called the Medicine Buddha
To cast his healing blue light.
The energy flowed and opened
A bridge between our hearts.

Treatments ended with joyful smiles,
And clasped hands of thanks,
No words nor translation were necessary
To express the mutual exchange
Of love and compassion
Between client and healer.

A small group of nuns
Watched carefully and followed our lead.
So quick and open to learn!
Within two weeks, they mastered basic techniques,
Understood key concepts,
And realized the value of their treatments.

The last day, each nunnery bestowed khatas upon us,
We celebrated over tea and cookies,
With special banana bread and exquisite gifts,
A rainbow at Geden Choeling Nunnery
Sent its blessings our way
And lit the path for our return.
